What is a Petadex? Inside Petable's sticker album of a whole city

The Petadex is Petable’s sticker album: a browsable index of every species and breed that lives around you, filled in one real animal at a time. Every animal you spot fills a slot. Every slot you haven’t filled yet sits there as a soft silhouette with a question mark — not a spoiler, just a gentle there’s still someone out there you haven’t met.

Your album, and your city’s

The Petadex has two views, and the second one is the magic:

• Mine — the species and breeds you have personally spotted. Your walking history, told in animals.
• My City — everything your whole community has found together. A progress ring fills as your city collectively meets its animals: 31 of 40 breeds spotted in your city.

That second view changes the feel of the game completely. You’re not grinding a personal checklist; you’re contributing to a shared civic project that happens to be adorable. When someone on the other side of town spots the neighbourhood’s first husky, your city’s album gets richer too.

How does a slot get filled?

Spot an animal with the in-app camera, and Petable verifies there’s a real animal in frame and identifies the species and likely breed. For street mixed-breeds — most of the world’s cats and dogs — the honest label is often “indie/street,” and that’s a first-class entry, not a consolation prize. Breed is flavour, never a gate: an uncertain guess can be corrected by the community, and no identification ever blocks a find from counting.

Why no animal is “worth more”

Collection games usually rank their creatures: commons, rares, legendaries. Petable deliberately doesn’t. A pedigreed golden retriever and a one-eared street tabby occupy equally sized slots in the Petadex, because ranking real animals by breed teaches exactly the wrong thing about real animals. Where rarity exists in Petable, it comes from story — being an animal’s First Finder, a rediscovery after months of silence, a seasonal moment — never from a pedigree hierarchy.

What the Petadex is quietly for

The deeper purpose is attention. Once you have an album with empty slots, you start noticing the animals you used to walk past: which corners have cats, which shopkeeper feeds the brown dog, which park has the confident pigeons (a later chapter — Petable launches with cats and dogs, and the system is built to welcome more species over time). The Petadex turns “a walk” into “a walk where you might meet someone.”
